The Challenge

In 2015 TMG Ltd asked Canopy to step in and manage the sales and administration of the Inserts inventory across the Weekend papers and magazines. In a declining Newspaper and Print market, we were tasked with the following KPI’s;

  • Stabilise and protect existing revenue
  • Reduce and replace the increasing churn of advertisers
  • Free up resources from a time-intensive sales and logistics inventory

The Solution

We created a team that sat within TMG’s offices to manage the inserts process from start to finish. We realigned the information system working closely with the production team to ensure that information flowed quickly and seamlessly through the business resulting in fewer queries.

Our team focused on providing sales support to the internal sales team across tricky inventory that needs to experience and skill to ensure successful campaigns for advertisers.

The Results

All insertions are run to a level of profitability and we have reduced polybagging costs by reducing the number of polybags per weeked working with our agencies and advertisers to concentrate inserts to a select weekends per month.  According to the DMA Newsbrands inserts revenue have decreased by up to 72% over the last 18 months where we have kept revenue lines stable and increasing them where possible.

We now invoice for all bookings, associated debt chasing and we pay TMG in one cheque at

the end of each month. The success marked the start of our prosperous 4-year and going partnership and we are now seen as a key partner for TMG they do not have to worry about this traditional revenue line.
